BrainPopJr. Community Helpers
This is an informational website for teachers, students, and families! I love that it gives students information on community helpers, as well as activities for the students. The site then can be used as an extension at home. It lists activities for families to do with their children!
Building Neighborhoods
This is an educational interactive website. The students can build neighborhoods and explore community helper roles as an interactive activity during SMART board class or individually on the iPad.
Community Helpers - Campus Tour Lesson
I liked Lesson #3 on this site because the teacher used dress up and the school community as a learning experience. I would tweak this lesson and see if the whole Pre-K could go on a tour of our campus and find the different teachers who are dressed up as various community helpers. Each teacher/community helper will then tell the students about their job!
Fire Safety Tool Kits
This is a great informational website that I can also create a lesson from. The National Fire Protection Association provides teachers with safety tool kits. I thought I could use one of the kits for safety precautions as a model, and then my students and I could come up with our own "Classroom Safety" tool kit.
Safety - Uh Ohs
The Uh Ohs feature is a resource provided by the National Fire Protection Association. There is a video and an interactive game that can help reiterate teaching children the importance of safety. I loved it because the Uh Ohs act out unsafe scenarios and then show the consequences. After, students can talk about what they could do to stay safe and avoid those consequences.
Curious George PBS Kids Interactive Matching
I love this site because my students love Curious George and it is an interactive educational game that can assess where my students are in their knowledge of community helpers! They have to match the objects to that community helper or even crutches to a hurt Curious George.
Community Helpers Scholastic Listen and Read
Scholastic provides a listen and read section for 8 community helpers - a police officer, a mayor, a pizza maker, a utility worker, a veterinarian, a firefighter, a librarian, and a pediatrician. Each section provides a picture of the Community Helper, an audio clip of the Community Helper describing their community role, and sentences that the students can read as the Community Helper reads them. I could use this site in Computer class, in SMART board class, or in small group/large group iPad work.
Community Helpers Activities and Resources
This site organizes activities, books, holidays, coloring pages, crafts, shapes, numbers, music, related fairy tales, and much more for each Community Helper. For example, I liked it because for the Baker there were activities and holidays listed, such as "National Cake Day." They also included books that could go with learning about baking, such as The Gingerbread Man, which we read at the beginning of the school year.
Community Helpers - What's My Job?
Another great activity to use on the SMART board or iPad in small groups! This interactive educational site describes jobs and the students have to then click on the picture of the person who matches the description of the job. For Pre-K, I would have to read the description and then have each student take a turn clicking on the appropriate picture.
Sparky the Fire Dog / Sparky
This would be a wonderful teaching tool to use on our SMART board or iPad during small groups. Sparky the Fire Dog is a fire dog who can engage and "spark" students' interest in fire safety.
Police Officer Lesson - What do they do for our Community?
This lesson is dedicated to teaching children how important Police Officers are to our community. Also, that they can trust Police Officers to protect them and keep them safe. Luckily at AOS we have HPD Policemen and women on campus to help with crossing the streets and carpool times. I would love to get one of them to talk with the class during this lesson!
Who are Community Helpers?
This lesson will explain to students that their community consists of people who help make it function successfully. After reading a book and discussing in circle time, I would model drawing a community helper for my students. They would then in turn retrieve their journals and draw a community helper that they think of. If they are able to write sentences, I would have them write what their community helper does. However, if this is not an ability of theirs, then they would dictate as I wrote what their community helpers do for the community.
Community Helpers Kindergarten Center Ideas
I loved this blog because the teacher included pictures of her students working through each center. Although some of the lessons are a bit above my Pre-K students' level, a handful of them will be able to successfully complete the activities. I can also modify and accommodate them to fit my other students' abilities.
Community Helpers
This site provides a a list of books for each type of community helper along with other resources, such as community helper activities, costumes, puzzles, etc.
Community Helpers books, printables, activities, songs, rhymes
This website lists books, activities, rhymes, songs, and printables for a Community Helpers theme unit. It is a wonderful resource for teachers to use to help students grasp the importance of all the various Community Helpers.
